EMA – Publication of the report on Social Media Data for Real World Evidence in Regulatory Decision Making

A report exploring the potential advantages and challenges of leveraging social media data in regulatory decision-making is available.

The report specifically focuses on the use of social media data in real-world settings, such as clinical care or the daily life of patients, to generate real-world evidence that could potentially support regulatory activities.

Such data includes:

  • demographic information;
  • patient experience data (PED);
  • data related to medicine use and disease factors.

The current report reviewed 73 relevant scientific articles and reviews identified through a literature search on the Embase database. Findings from these papers were used to formulate a set of regulatory use-cases for social media data, as well as to identify relevant challenges and opportunities related to their use. Ultimately, 7 points for consideration for future actions are proposed to establish value and enable the use of social media data in medicine regulation.
